To be fair, the EMU hardware requirement is listed first on their list of requirements for running their software. You'll lose some money, but somebody will likely buy it from you.

You don't accept their license agreement, which they didn't fully disclose when you bought the product. Technically, though usually hard to do, they have to take it back. You can always try to take the stuff back, or write a bunch of nasty emails saying you don't accept the license agreement. They've done a good job of NOT advertising their dongle-ness. At least I know not to give them any $ in the future. I wanted to backup a lot of my Kurz patches with SynthSwipe, but again, it's not worth a dongle and always having to select midi ports. There are some nice sounds in the sound bank, but I can live without them. This will actually be the first time I've ever bought a product I wasn't happy with. I thought I knew everything I needed to about the product. make sure that if you keep it you render any work to permanent files so you can open projects in the future.ĭamn-I guess I should have done more research. Projects can last years, and dongles break, get lost, get stolen, etc. You'll have to decide whether you can live with it too.īut remember, and I'm not trying to bash EMU: Since I got Proteus X2 for $100, I can live with it. For me, I have a 1616M on my laptop, so i don't have to carry around the midi interface to use Proteus X2 mobile, so I just leave the xmidi dongle connected to my home machine permanently, and out of the way. My suggestion is that you evaluate whether you want projects (in the future) strapped to the hardware and decide whether to keep the gear or not.

you MUST have EMU hardware of some type to use ANY of it.

I don't like them hiding this kind of thing, and in this case, I'd actually RATHER have a dongle than a goofy, unusable midi interface that's HUGE by comparison.īTW - ALL EMU software uses a dongle. It came with my Proteus X2, and had I known (they don't tell you on the box or the website) that it was a dongled app, I wouldn't have bought it. I have the xmidi 2x2 as well, and have the same problem with selecting the io, and then having to reselect it.įunny thing is, I didn't need (or want) another midi interface. If you go to your processes dialog, you'll also see a 3rd party service that acts as a copy protection service, making sure that your EMU software has the dongle connected. I will use the E-MU to do the swiping if need be, but I am just goign to continue using my Midisport for everything else. I would think my Midisport 2x2 is just as good. I still don't understand why the E-MU software has to have the E-MU midi box. This never happened to me with the Midisport. Sonar keeps telling me I don't have any ports defined. Now, every time I start Sonar, I have to select them again. The E-MU inputs and outputs were listed and I selected and accepted them. Since I disconnected the Midisport, Sonar asked me to select Midi ports at startup. One difference I noticed is that the Midiman would always show up in my Safely Remove Hardware list, but the E-MU doesn't. So I went through the installation of all the E-MU stuff.

My eceryday midi interface is a Midiman 2x2 Midisport which externally controls my Kurzweil. The documentation states you must use the E-MU midi box to use things like SynthSwipe. I just got the Emulator X2 package, which comes with an E-MU 2x2 Xmidi box.
